The Spring Closet Detox

March 20th is the official first day of  Spring!  When spring hits I know it’s time to start deep cleaning and organizing my house.  The first thing I normally start with is my closet.

At least twice a year I switch out my clothes and purge my closet of things I didn’t wear for the past year.  So how do we do this.  First things first you must declutter.  You will need a few trash bags for this.  One thing to ask yourself while decluttering, “will I ever wear this”.   If the answer is no, then put the piece in either your trash pile or donate pile (depending on the condition).

The next thing you need to do is figure out if it still fits.  Try everything on and get rid of anything that doesn’t fit or is just no longer your style.  Consignment shops are a good way to make a little cash off items that are in great condition.  I would go through this process with both your spring/summer clothes and your fall/winter clothes.

Before packing up your winter clothes, make sure to go through and wash or send to the cleaners those items that need it.  You don’t want to store funky clothes; it won’t be pleasant when you unpack them when Fall rolls around.  If there are any damaged items, repair those that can be and trash those items that are beyond repair.  Don’t donate raggedy clothes, that’s just not right.  Complete the exact same steps for your shoes and accessories.  I display my most of my shoes n the shelves in my closet. I keep the others in their original boxes. Matching, clear shoe boxes are a great way to store your shoes and keep your closet all nice and cute.

Once you have purged your closet of winter items and items you no longer wear or want, it’s time to start organizing.  Arrange your keep pile by season, color and type.

Matching hangers will put the finishing touch on your newly organized closet.  Huggable hangers are my favorite.  I normally fold my jeans and stack them on the shelves in my closet.

Give it a Boutique-style Feel

Spring cleaning is the perfect to reorganize and make your closet all nice and pretty. If you really want to give your closet more of a pop, give it more of a boutique feel. Here are a few ways you can accomplish this.

Add a little color to your closet with paint. A bright pink or Tiffany blue would look amazing in a closet (as long as you don’t share it with your spouse).

You can add a nice chandelier to class it up a little more.

Matching hangers will give your closet a nice, uniform feel. Please no wire hangers, the thought of them make me itch.

Every girl needs a floor length mirror. If you have the space, adding a mirror will give your closet a nice dressing room feel. (Related Post: How to Give Your Closet a Boutique Style Makeover)
